Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas)

Nitroux oxide, commonly know as laughing las, is a safe, colorless, and sweet- smelling gas that is inhaled to help reduce anxiety during dental procedures.

At Wall Family Dentistry we understand that visiting the dentist can cause anxiety for some patients. This is why we offer nitrous oxide to help you feel calm and at ease  during dental treatment.

Why Nitrous Oxide?

Nitrous oxide has been widely used in dentistry for decades as a trusted mothod of mild sedation. Patients typically breathe a mixture of 30% nitrous oxide and 70% oxygen, ensuring both safety and comfort throughout their visit.

What to Expect

  • You remain fully conscious and able to breath on your own.
  • You stay in control of all bodily functions.
  • You may feel relaxed and may experience mild amnesia.
  • Some patients may lightly doze off and not recall parts of the procedure.

Benefits of Nitrous Oxide

  • Adjustable Sedation: The level of sedation can be increased or decreased at any time.
  • Quick Onset: Effects are felt within 20 seconds, with full relaxation and pain- relief properties developing in 2-3 minutes.
  • No Lingering Effects: There is no “hangover” sensation after the appointment.
  • Reduces Gag Reflex: Ideal for patients who struggle with gagging during treatment.

When Nitrous Oxide May Not Be Recommended

While nitrous oxide is considered very safe, it may not be suitable for patients with:

  • Emphysema or chronic respiratory issues
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
  • Recent chest infections or head colds
  • Certain breathing difficulties.

If you are unsure how your body will respond, you can request a 5 minute trial to see how it feels before committing to using it during your treatment.
